I grew up on the backs of horses - first on beautiful, wonderful ponies, and then on Dad's saddle horses. Horses were, and still are, the most important part of my life - right after God and family. Fred, on the other hand, grew up horseless, except for the occasional times when he got to ride a friend's horse. He more or less felt that horses were too expensive to keep, too time consuming, plus they ran away and had to be chased to be caught. But you know what they say - opposites attract! It wasn't until Valentine's Day, 1999, when I bought him his very own American Quarter Horse, Spinner, that I won him over to "my" side. Shortly thereafter, we moved out of the tiny four stall barn that I had been using for years and years, and into the new nine stall barn, complete with indoor arena, tack room, and wash rack, that he had suddenly decided we couldn't do without. (Why hadn't I thought of giving him his own horse before?) Happily, he has since then purchased his second Quarter Horse, Foxy, who is in reining/cutting training.
While still in the small barn, I had developed an interest in dressage. Since I couldn't afford to buy a European Warmblood, I decided to breed my own version. I crossed my gorgeous Arabian mare with an 18hh Percheron stallion, and out came an honest-to-gosh warmblood! An "American" warmblood. Thus, our breeding farm, "American Made Warmbloods," was born. We began shopping for premium quality Percheron and North American Spotted Draft mares.
At the same time, we became aware of another wonderful cross that was producing world class sport horses called "Georgian Grandes." A Georgian Grande is a cross between the American Saddlebred and the draft horse. They exhibit very correct conformation, superb movement, and breath-taking beauty. They are competing very successfully with the European warmbloods in dressage, jumping, eventing, etc. In fact, the farm in Ohio who first began breeding the Georgian Grande, is now listed by USDF as the number two producer of dressage horses in the USA. Fred and I were so impressed by this cross that we began shopping for an exceptional American Saddlebred stallion.
Our World Champion American Saddlebred stallion, Star Of Fame, is a son of Color Of Fame, who is the leading sire of Half-Arabian Sport Horses. "Star" is a bay and white tobiano, so we get lots of color and chrome on our babies. We get good, thick bone, strong joints, and laid back temperaments from the draft horse, and athleticism, refinement and presence from the Saddlebred. The Georgian Grande is "The Perfect Blend."
